Bountiful and generous God we bring to you the needs of all who go hungry every day; those who are reliant on foodbanks and handouts, or who scavenge in bins hoping to find something to eat. We lay before you the needs of those who have no place of safety and security to call home, who sleep on the streets, in hostels or sofa surf in friend's living rooms. We bring to you the needs of those who have no access to sanitation and who walk miles each day to collect water, which is often ridden with disease. We cry for those in pain, discomfort, and fear for they have no access to medical care. We place in your hands all children for whom education is only a dream.
Forgive that you have provided so much but that many go without the essentials of life whilst others have more than enough. As we offer our prayer help us turn it into a prayer of action. May we not simply leave our concerns at your feet but offer ourselves in your service to distribute your baskets of plenty, to work for justice, that all my have life in its fulness.
Help us to have the words of John always on our hearts, "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?"
We pray in Jesus' name who taught that what we do for the least of people we do for him. Amen.
Loving God, we pray for everyone who is hungry today – whether they live thousands of miles away or in our local communities.
Lord, the scale of global poverty is beyond our understanding. Give bread to those who are hungry and a hunger for justice for those of who have bread.
God grant your wisdom to leaders and experts working to tackle hunger, and that they would be willing and able to make progress in identifying ways to combat food security and that nations will be generous in their giving of emergency aid.
Give us your daily bread, and help us to share abundantly the plenty that we have been blessed with. Open our hands to hold what we have lightly and to share cheerfully.
We thank you for all who work to provide for hungry people. Bless those working for the World Food Programme, may their efforts bear much fruit.
We pray in the name of him who is the Bread of Life, Jesus the Saviour of the World. Amen.
Eternal God, who gave us Jesus Christ, the bread of life, forgive us that so many across the world go hungry every day. Forgive us that through war we exacerbate the misery of people who have no part in the conflict.
Each day we pray, "give us this day our daily bread". Help us to make our prayer a reality. May the cries of people hungry, and neglected, across the world inspire compassion and mercy among those who have plenty.
Guide the leaders of nations to re-examine structures and markets so all may be able to break bread together. Protect those in aid agencies who seek to bring food relief. Bless their work.
We pray in the name of him who fed five thousand people on a hill side with the small gift offered by a little boy. Amen.
Loving God, we pray for all people who have nowhere to call home, and particularly for those who sleep rough under railway arches, under bridges, on park benches, in doorways or bus stations. They are very vulnerable and so we ask your protection for them.
We thank you for those who care for them providing food and blankets.
We pray that rough sleepers will be treated kindly and with dignity, since all are people of your creation made in your image.
May the people who represent us in our parliaments and on our governing bodies show compassion to people homeless and fearful of what may happen to them each night. May they work tirelessly to provide shelter, security and hope, and to eliminate all that causes people to sleep rough on the streets.
May those with warm, safe, homes and beds to sleep in not be lulled into complacency and forgetfulness, nor despise people who are homeless.
Grant us open hearts and equip us to work for justice through our words and actions.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
for people thirsty, without water
Loving God, you provide the water of life; but we cry with those who have no water to drink and must walk miles each day to collect it or risk injury or death climbing wells. Without water there is no life.
You make streams flow in the wilderness and the desert to blossom as a rose, remind us of Your command to love our neighbours. Turn our hearts to ensure all have clean water and sanitation. Bless the work of charitable organisations like Water Aid providing wells and water supplies to desperate people.
Direct the leaders of nations to address the climate crisis and humanitarian needs of so many. Prevent us from resting until we know we have done everything we can to ensure no one need be without the essential for life.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
